Abstract
Mountain forests in Swotzerland have the status of forest with special protective function (FSP), when stocking on slopes with natural hazard potential above objects with considerable damage potential, if the protective potential of the stand is given. For these stands there exist silvicultural guidelines with instructions for minimal tending measures that are necessary to maintain the protective function. The guidelines describe in detail the ideal and minimal requirements for 31 forest site types in the montane and subalpine zone and for six different hazard types, namely snow avalanches, landslides, erosion, torrents, debris flow, and rockfall. They also prescribe a standardised procedure for the analysis of the present state and functionality of a stand. The minimal tending measures are derived from the difference between the present and the ideal state of the stand. Included are procedures for control of execution, efficiency and success of the silvicultural treatment.
