Current status of protective forests in the Federal Republic of Germany is reviewed in the context of their contribution to rural development in mountainous areas. Definition, importance and legalstatus of protective forests as well as resulting restrictions and obligations for forest management are presented at the example of two states. Recommendations for silvicultural treatment for different types and objectives of protective forests in these states are presented. Criteria and indicators for the assessment of fulfilment of protective functions and need for management interventions are discussed.
