Abstract
There is no definition of mountain forests in France, and then no specific policy. Protective forests have been regulated by the laws of 1860, 1882, (state forests), and 1922 (private forests). The legal obligation is to keep the area forested, under the responsibility of administration. Uneven-aged structure is aimed at, , with precaution in harvesting and roads construction. About 30% of state mountain forests have a significant protection role, 10% without timber production. Production then remains a prevailing function of mountain forests for rural deveopment and local employment. Specific cares to protective forestst are paid in state forests through national equalisation, but not in community or private forests. But new helps are being created for harvesting operation, notably with cables. An administrative frame will be Natural Hazards Prevention Plans.
