The pine weevil Hylobius abietis is one of the most serious pests in young afforestations. The damage caused by H. abietis have been on the increase for a few years. Main reasons for the gradation are large areas damaged and destroyed by storm, hail and bark beetles, continuous dieing of suffering trees. The remaining stumps allow for breeding and the climatic conditions favour the development of pest in general. An overview of biology and ecologically remarkable behavior is given. Traditional and alternative, modern methods of control measures are introduced and discussed. Sometimes bark beetles can become a problem in afforestations and tree nurseries, too. The most important species are Pityogenes chalcographus and Pityophtherus pitygraphus. Recommendations for control and measures are given.
