  • Abstract
During the last 50 years the populations of Capercaillie are worldwide decreasing except in the Russian Taiga; some populations especially in Central Europe are already extinct. Obviously the Taiga habitat suits the Capercaillie optimal. At the IX International Congress of Game Biologists in Moscow the author emphasized that the Capercaillie is a very swift starter and a fast short-distance flier and it necessarily must have the possibility to fly some 10 m without meeting with any obstacle. Knowing now the velocity if its flight, the space for a save start is estimated about 500 m3. The structure of the Taiga allows such starts. In forests produced by modern methods there is no possibility for that. Nevertheless if you accept diminuition in timber-production and income by tourism successful Capercaillie-management is possible. This is demonstrated in a large Austrian forest district.
