  • Abstract
The reasons for forest decline in the Gleinalm region is a combination of many different factors in the fields of geology/soil, terrain, air, climate, tree physiology, game and domestic ungulates, and forestry/silviculture, all of which interact with one another (table 3.11.1, p. 238). In addition to the problematic soil and climate conditions the main problem factors are, the actual forest structure (mainly due to the clearcut system and the predominance of coniferous species), the high degree of stem damage by bark stripping (caused by roe deer), insufficient forest regeneration with former heavy browsing damage, and the high predisposition of the forest to game damage.
