  • Abstract
Between 1826 and 1829, an increasing occurrence of Thaumetopoea processiones was reported. According to the authors, the mass-propagations in Münsterland, the northern Ruhr region and in Sauerland was so great that entire, different-aged oak forests were stripped of leaves. Warm years might have been the factor causing these mass-propagations. To combat the insects, the caterpillarsÖ nest were either fumigated or burnt out. In 1829, mass-propagation ended as suddenly as it had started. Even though the moth is latent in Westfalia, mass-propagation has not reappeared since the last century.
