Abstract
The first life-phase of forest stands is of vital importance for the production of high quality wood. It is the most dynamic phase of forest stand development. The purpose of the survey is to determine how oak stands develop by examining similar afforested sites of various age. The study is located 50 km West from Göttingen where a step by step afforestation with sessile oak is established. "Natural conditions" were investigated by describing a theoretical time sequence. The age increases from stand to stand. The range is between 5 and 24 years. A total number of 7 different ages is available, where no silvicultural treatment has been undertaken. The paper deals with quality alteration especially ramification. The five categories outlined in fig. 1 were used to characterize the crown morphology. The intraspecific competition, comments from tree density, has an important influence on growth within the time sequence. The younger stands up to 10 years of age, contained a high percentage of poorly-formed crowns (type 4 and 5). The portion of trees described as "monocorm" (type 1) grew from 10 % among the 5 year-old stands, to 36 % among the oldest, aged 24 years and a decrease in brush like and fork type trees, which be-come insignificant over the time.
