A 60-year-old Norway spruce atand, where the water and nutrient supply (pre-industrial rain) has been manipulated by changing the quantity and quality of the precipitation over several years, was investigated in terms of growth, vitality, photosynthesis and transpiration as well as nutrient concentration in the needles. Strong reactions of the trees could be found after the reduction of the water supply: Needle losses up to 50% could be observed, growth and vitality were reduced. The contents of phosphor und manganese in the needles became significant lower in teh years of most intensive drought. The trees with the modified, preindustrial rain seemed to be more vigorous, but during the first years after the treatments they showed no obvious reactions neither in growth increment nor in photosynthesis and transpiration.
