  • Abstract
Magnesium fertilizers derived from amgnesite were applied to mitigate nutrient deficiencies in Norway spruce stands, showing symptoms of the montane yellowing type of forest decline. The experiment is located in the Bohemian massif and comprises three pure Norway spruce (Picea abies) stands of different age, that are exposed to moderate acid deposition loads. Needle analysis showed a significant increase in current needle Ca and Mg contents within few years after fertilization. Initially enhanced nitrate concentrations in the soil solution of fertilized plots soon declined to normal levels. Reduction of yellowing symptoms, increase in crown density and positive effects on soil solution chemistry and nutrient content of foliage indicate, that oxidic magnesium fertilizers are an appropriate measure to counteract nutrient depletion caused by historic land use and deposition of acidifying components.
