Abstract
Forest decline in the Thueringer Wald usually occurs at sites of poor base saturation and is evident by Mg- and Zn-deficiency. Application of liquid fertilizers (Mg-sulphate, Mg-chloride, Mg-ligninsulphonate solutions), though expensive, yielded no sustanied effects on Mg nutrition. Mg-shale was compared to magnesitic lime, comprising 20% caustic magnesite and 80% Mg- shale. Magnesitic lime proofed to be superior in regard of acid neutralizing capacity, as obtained by lab experiments, as well as in practical use. Specific advantages are lower dosage, quick Mg release and beneficial side effects due to Ca release. The treatments suggested that 2 to 3 tons of lime fertilizers could be an appropriate measure. Latest results from low elevation Scotch pine stands showed immediate response of needle Mg contents in case of Mg sulphate application and slower effects of magnesite lime.
