Abstract
New type offorest decline symptoms are frequently associated with nutritional imbalances, especially with Mg deficiency. Application of Mg fertilizers and liming has become a common practice. In consequence a kieserite and lime experiment at a Mg deficient Norway spruce stand in Oberwarmensteinach/Fichtelgebirge was carried out. The trials proofed to cause a sustained increase in soil-Mg content, probably due to sulphate adsorption. Kieserit application improved root growth in mineral soil layers. The Mg status of trees recovered rapidly. Fertilizer effects on needle Mg contents could be observed even 7 years after treatment. Generally visually recovered trees showed higher increment rates than trees with yellowing symptoms. Our data give similar results as other fertilizer experiments in the Fichtelgebirge and all over Germany. Fertilzation and liming are appropriate strategies to stabilize declining forests.
