In the Solling forest an ecosystem manipulation experiment with roof constructions underneath the canopy of a Norway spruce stand is run since 1991. The responses to artificially prepared, "pre-industrial" precipitation and to extended summer droughts with intensive rewetting are investigated in two parallel roof experiments and evaluated against a roof control and an ambient control plot. Hypotheses derived from forest ecosystem monitoring can thus be directly tested using this "laboratory in the field". The interdisciplinary project design comprises investigations and integrated evaluation of the water-, energy- and element budgets, growth and population dynamics from the root zone to the canopy.
