Norway spruce stands in montane regions of polluted areas show moderate Mg deficiencies together with typical SO2-damages, whereas heavy Mg deficiencies are linked to "montane yellowing"-symptoms. Mg deficiencies as well as Ca losses in case of needle yellowing can be mitigated or compensated by application of dolomitic limistone with MgO added. Especially in periods of photochemical stress Mg fertilization leads to improvement of leaf chlorophyll content. 2 tons of this type offertilizer are appropriate to compensate present day for 10 to 20 years. Ca and Mg application mitigates damage symptoms, bur is no remedy against the sources of forest decline.
