    Although Mg-deficiency is among the major causes of 'forest decline , physiological and structural consequences on tree growth are still unknown. Detailed knowledge of chemical bindings and micromorphological distribution in cells and tissues is mandatory. First results of fractionated chemical analysis of spruce needles are given. The functional and structural role of magnesium for chloroplasts, cytoplasma, vacuoles, cell walls and sieve elements is described. In addition the consequences of deficient Mg supply are discussed. It becomes obvious, that Mg deficiency symptoms do not simply arise from lower chlorophyll contents. Instead it becomes apparent that energy metabolism, enzyme activity and phloem loading processes are severely affected.
