- AbstractLithuania, the southern-most of the three Baltic Republics, has a population of 3.8 million. The two million hectares of forested area comprise about 1/3 of the total land area. The primary tree species are pine, birch and spruce. The stands are administered according to forest managemen planning. Currently, of Lithuanian's total foreste area, 53% is state-owned, 11% privately-owned and the remaining areas are likewise to be privatized. On the average, the 43 State Forest Enterprises manage approximately 45,000 ha, the figure fluctuating between 18.000-76.000 ha. This paper presents both the organizational structure of Lithuanian State Forest Enterprises and the timber market situation. Attention is also called to the importance of nature conservation, since 10% of the state lands are under especial protection.
