Abstract
This article describes the design and construction, as a student project, of legends for both monochrome and polychrome forest maps based on a well-known system of tropical forest classification developed by FAO/UNEP. The carthographic problems was to design area symbols for this hierarchical classification for use at a variety of small and medium scales and for areal units of very variable size. The symbols were designed to promote spontaneous visual grouping of the classification factors, and also for production in small drawing offices with limited equipment. To test their applicability, an existing map of a forest area in Kalimantan at 1:500 000 scale was redesigned using the legends developed.
