Fumigants were applied to stumps in situ which were infected with honey fungus. The treatments were tested on seven conifer species. Stumps were excavated at different periods after treatment and the extent of Armillaria was measured by cultural isolations onto selective media in the laboratory. Metham-sodium (Sistan) significantly reduced the incidence of Armillaria in stump and root samples for all species, even up to 3,5 years after treatment. Dazomet (Basamid) also gave a significant reduction but was less effective than metham-sodium. Methyl bromide was only tested in one experiment, where it almost totally eliminated Armillaria from Scots pine stumps. There was a high incidence of Trichoderma sp. isolated from the treated stumps. The results show that fumigants have considerable potential for reducing Armillaria inoculum in situations where stumps cannot by physically removed from the ground.
