By far the most serious disease to affect tree willow is watermark, caused by the bacterial pathogen Erwinia salicis. Within the U.K. it poses a serious problem only in East Anglia, principally on cricket bat willow (Salix alba var. caerulea), but isolated outbreaks have recently been found outside this area. The symptoms and methods of spread are described and the risk to increasingly common amenity willow plantings is emphasised. Diligence is called for from arboriculturists to prevent the spread of this disease in amenity willows.
