As a consequence of the regulation of the Danube river in the seventies of the 19th century the natural stream dynamics of the left hand alluvial areas SE of Vienna (Lobau) were much reduced. While the use of this territory as imperial hunting grounds limited additional changes, it also hampered scientific studies. A short survey is presented on the geology, relief, climate and the exploration of the area. The effects of the stream regulations on hydrological conditions, sedimentation processes, reduction of the water bodies and vegetation are presented in detail. All of the remaining backwaters are characterized in respect to their morphology, water dynamics, sediments and plant life.
