Root and butt rot of conifers caused by Heterobasidion annosum is considered to be the most important disease of woody species in the forests of Eastern Europe and the Baltic countries. The disease is widespread in the coniferous forests of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Ukraine and the European parts of Russia. The incidence and spread of root rot are influenced by the climatic and soil/hydrological conditions of this large area.
