Abstract
In a systems analysis of a planted Eucalyptus exserta stand in South China an existing computer simulation model describing the dynamics of biomass development and the carbon and nitrogen fluxes within the atmosphere-tree- soil-system was adapted and significantly expanded. To parametrize the resulting process-oriented simulation tool, empirical studies concerning assimilate partitioning, fine root distribution, and carbon and nitrogen contents of the different tree biomass compartments and soil layers were carried out. Simulation runs do illustrate the consequences of the current practice of using litter as fuel material in comparison to a management option restricting harvest to coarse wood removal only. Several calculations were executed to test the sensitivity of the model (results) against changes in the initial conditions of some state variables or varying quantification of some key parameters related to carbon or nitrogen cycling.
