  • Abstract
From the review of the literature concerning characteristics of wood from diseased trees far from pollution sources the following conclusions can be drawn: Quantitative and qualitative studies on the anatomical and chemical characteristics of the wood from diseased softwood and hardwood species indicate that changes which impair the quality of wood do not occur. The physicaland elastomechanical properties of wood from diseased trees correspond with those of wood from healthy trees. Wood in storage does not indicate a predisposition for quality loss. Corresponding investigations on wood from severely diseased trees by local emittors (e.g. SO2, HF) are very rare: it turned out that drastical reduction in growth ring width is accompanied with smaller cells with reduced wall thickness. Additional accessory compounds in the sapwood reveal early senescence. The physical and elastomechanical properties of this wood are not yet investigated in detail. Further case studies are recommended on wood from trees severely suffering from local emittors.
