Abstract
Presented are the results of investigation on fibre length variations from natural population of birch wood (Betula pendula, Roth.) crown in Croatia. Fibre length vary from 0.38 mm to 1.77 mm, with mean of 0.98 mm. Fibril length in trunkwood and branchwood growth rings increases from pith to bark. The amount of fibre length increase in trunkwood is higher than in branchwood. Fibre length in trunkwood is slightly higher in breast hight, than in hight of 9.3 m from the stump. The difference is only 4%. Fibre length in branchwood is on average for 15% shorter than in trunkwood. Fibre length on trees from locality of Duboka is in trunkwood 12%, and in branchwood 11% longer than in trees from locality of Duga Resa.
