This article explains the reasons for the Austrian forestry's and timber industry's clear agreement on EU membership. Forest policies have become much more important in the European Union since the richly-wooded Scandinavian countries became EU members at the same time as Austria. However, forestry and timber industry retain national resposibility. A multitude of measures for a common European strategy in forestry are suggested.
