  • Abstract
50 hectars of pole-sized Scots pine stands on poor sandy soil in the Lueneburger Heide (Northern Germany) had been destroyed by fire in August 1995. Without clraring the burned stand the site was replanted in May 1996 with 2 years old Scots pines and some Douglas firs, beeches and sessile oaks. In summer 1996 90%-100% of the Scots pines and Douglas firs were killed mainly by Rhizina undulata. Natural regeneration of Scots pine, coming up abundantly near unburned neighbouring stands, as well as planted beeches and oaks remained undamaged. Until July 1997 the activity of the fungus had apparently ceased completely. This was the first important case of Rhizina-root rot on Scots pine in Lower Saxony. It was attributed to the uncleared site and too early replanting. In former afforestations of large fire sites in this area the burned stands where often cleared before replanting. If this method is not pursued for economic and ecological reasons, replanting must be delayed at least for one year, or natural regeneration should be favoured.
