Considering the great silvicultural importance of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in Hesse investigations about factors influencing stability are necessary. Chosen aspects are delineated by examples of activites of the Hessian Agency for Forest Management Planning, Forest Research and Forest Ecology and evaluated in respect to the planned extension of beech in the Hessian state forests. The stability of beech stands seems also in comparison to other tree species to be sufficient to reach this objective.
