Abstract
This essay reflects a lecture held by the author at the Faculty of Forestry, University of Goettingen, on November 13, 1996. At the beginning the goals, the syllabus and the structure of forest history lectures are presented. The importance of knowledge in forest history in association with public relations is emphasized and several examples are given. Then experiences and results of 25 years of research and teaching in forest history are reviewed. Finally the author stresses the danger of severe reduction or even a total loss of lectures offered and the limitations in research.
