Since 1989 there has been a regulation in the Netherlands which provides co- operating forest owners with an annual subsidy of ten guilders for each hectare that has been contributed via a co-operation. The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, which also comprises forestry, has asked for an evaluation of this regulation concerning its effectivity and support. More specifically, the following topics have been researched: degree and form of co-operation; financial effects; non-financial effects; ideas about future policy. This article offers a brief report on the evaluation that has been carried out. Main conclusions are that there is conciderable co-operation, that the effects of co-operation, in general, are positive, and that for the coming years, financial support for co-operation is also required.
