In Spain 95% approximately 50.5 million hectares total area are suitable for forest growth. In 1991 the approximately 12 million hectares of forest land were made up of high forests, composite forests and brushwood. The area covered with forests continuously decreased over the last decades. Fire, storms and extreme drought as well as overcutting are the main reasons for this decrease. The importance of forests in regard to their protection function, specially for the Mediterranean part of the country, is shown. The article introduces Spanish vegetation in general, the present development and the "Mapa Forestal de Espana". This comprehensive forest map is a requirement and basis for reafforestation planning in Spain.
