Abstract
In the Upper Palatinate- and Lower Bavarian region the average amount of timber caused by windfall, snow- and insect damages was 1.25 cubic meter (solid volume without bark) per hectare and year during the last forty years. On the basis of the present price level the loss of income caused by damaged timber adds up to a quarter billion DM. A statistical testing method indicates an increasing tendency. An analysis of the causes and the comparison with other Bavarian regions shows differences between tree species. The risk of damage for spruce trees is about three times as high as for pine trees and five times as high as for deciduous trees. Silvicultural consequences are discussed, for example leaving shade tolerant species as understorey, thinning methods and forms of natural regeration.
