The government of the Lao People Democratic Republik is going different ways to stop the uncontrolled felling of forests and to safe the existent forest area. One of these ways is the underwater felling of trees which have been submerged in the Nam Ngum Reservoir for more than 20 years. Divers go down with hydraulic-saws, bring the trees up with rear mounted single-drum- winches and put them to the beach by special metal airtanks. At the moment 50% of Laos is forest area and should be brought up to 70% until the year 2 000. This aim will not be attained, but every step on the way will be a good step for the country, the people, the forest and the environment.
