Over an 8-year-period the development of natural regeneration and ground vegetation in two sessile oak/hornbeam mixed stands has been investigated under four different canopy densities (clearcut, weak and strong thinnings, untreated control plot). After a successful regeneration with numerous oak- seedlings, the tree species compostion changed more and more to a majority of hornbeam seedlings (from 4% in 1983 to 61% in 1990). Characteristic growth developments of plant density and height could be found in terms of different light conditions. In spite of strong competing vegetation on the clearcut plot the full light conditions here resulted in considerably better growth compared to all other plots. Recommendations for silvicultural practice are derived.
