Abstract
Forests are open ecosystems at present suffering from significant losses of essential nutrients such as Mg, Ca and K in a wide range of habitats. These nutrient losses are caused particularly by acid rain and nitrogen containing air pollutants impairing the stability of the forest ecosystem and reducing the vitality of the tree population. Many ailing forest ecosystems have lost their self healing power. Simply reducing the input of harmful substances into the forest ecosystem will not make up the nutrient losses having occurred in the past. Judicious application of nutrients, based on leaf soil analysis, balances disproportionate nutrient ratios in the soil, thus contributing to the stabilisation of forest ecosystems spoiled by manmade pollutants. Nutrient application supposed to be an integral part of silvicultural practices aiming a self-regulating and sustainable forest ecosystems.
