However, environmental stress as well as prospective global climatic changes threaten genetic variation and thus also the long-term stability of forest ecosystems. The Commission of the European Community has recognized the urgent need for research in this area. In cooperation with the Department of Forest Genetics and Forest Plant Breeding of the University of Goettingen, the Commission organized a workshop on genetic variation in fores tree populations in Goettingen. Researchers from different countries of the European Community, Austria, and Scandinavia presented reports on the state of the art. They described methods and problems of performing genetic inventories in forest tree populations and discussed consequences for the long term maintenance of genetic variation and the protection of genetic systems.
