Abstract
In Switzerland, as in many other industrialised countries, urbanisation has happened mainly at the expense of agriculture. The loss of land could partly be compensated by utilization of such areas that formerly had been coultivated only extensively or not at all thus leading to an ecological impoverishment at the landscape. Due to a stict forest legislation the forest area has not decreased in spite of increasing need for land for habitation, traffic and agriculture, and in some regions the forest area has even increased. It has to be expected that the need for land will persist in future. To counteract this tend the goverment has created restrictive laws in order to protect arable land and ecologically important biotopes in the same way as forests. The equal treatment of different types of land calls for regional planning that ca ensure optimum land use. This development has a strong impact on decision making in forestry. More and more the forest authorities have to co-ordinate and co-operate with authorities from related fields.
