The objective is to find a way to estimate the crown density in connection with forest monitoring in a more objective way than the present procedure. The box method, used to determine the fractal dimension, is tried to this effect. The method is based on the use of a video camera and a computer equipped with a video monitor and a frame grabber. The method is tried on 8 trees chosen to this purpose. The dimensions seem to vary between 1.5 and 1.9, depending upon the density. The standard error is probably less than 0.02.
