Immature and mature embryos of Picea abies cultured in darkness on a modified MS medium supplemented with an auxin (2,4-D, 2-4 mg.1-1) and a cytokinin (BAP 1 mg.1-1) produced embryogenic callus. The embryogenic callus with organized embryolike structures was subcultured to fresh media and after transfer to media with a reduced concentration of growth regulators, somatic embryos developed. The development of somatic embryos into plantlets was stimulated on a low salt medium (WPM). Some plantlets were transplanted into soil.
