The paper briefly discusses several well-known continuous variables for describing the state of a forest, i.e. indices of density, competition, aggregration and deversity. Two new variables are presented which are particularly meaningful for describing uneven-aged mixed forest, namely "mingling which is defined as the probability that the nearest neighbour of a randomly chosen tree is not of the same species, and" differentiation which corresponds to the average ratio of the diameters (or heights) of the nearest neighbours in a stand of trees.
