Abstract
A short review is given on the current state of art in research on genetics and breeding in oak in Western Germany. Some special emphasis has been given to recently published works on postglacial history of oak in Europe and their basic value for genecological investigations. It is to be claimed, that research on genetic variation in oak with the help of biochemical methods is still at the beginnings, especially in Germany. The importance of intensified population genetic studies is stressed. The potential value of provenance studies, e.g. in the variation of quantitative characters expressed in growth trials in different sites, is mentioned. A balance account on the supply and requirement of seedcrops and nursery plants shows, that there should be a an exceed in supply for Western Germany. On the other hand this exceed is particularly due to imports, mainly in Pedunculate Oak. In oak breeding results to application by means of seed orchards are often due to low seed production. A short survey is given on strategies, methods and techniques of preservation of gene resources in oaks. Finally some proposals are made for future research.
