The contents of organic, inorganic and total sulphur in sprucae needles from different sites of the Rhine-Main area (FRG) were determined. The ratio "organic to inorganic sulphur contents" is a more adequate parameter to detect the impact of sulphur diocide than total sulphur content. The results of this study suggest that damages of spruce due to SO2 can be expected if the rations are less than 1.
