Abstract
The effects of air pollution from Cubato on the structure and dynamics of a montane rain forest habe been investigated Paranapiacapa City, at the top of the "Serra do Mar", in the southeastern part of Sao Paulo State, Brazil. Results indicate that trees are reduced both in number and species composition, litter production is reduced, litter decomposition is retarded and the soil is strongly acid, with high levels of exchangeable Al. The extremely sparse ccanopy results in very low values of rain interception percentage in more affected areas. The rain water is acid, with high contents of SO4 and N-compounds and a highly poitive correlation between pH and NH4 concentrations in throughfall and rainfall was oberserved.
