Abstract
Poplar bark necrosis, caused by the fungus Dothichiza populea Sacc. et Briard is considered internationally as one of the most dangerouspoplar diseases. It has a worldwide distribution, attacking the different popl ar clones to different degrees (Taris 1951). In the beginning of 1987, the fungus was found to have provoked important damages at the poplar nurseries of the Forest Research Institute of Thessaloniki. As a result thousands of plants had to be destroyed. In this paper, the biology, geographical distribution, symptoms of the disease, as well as control methods are described. The aim of the present work is to give to non specialists those data which will enable them to identify the disease and at the same time take all proventive measures during transportation and planting of poplar cuttings. Chemical control methods are also given. For better understanding of the disease danger, the authors refer to the economic importance of poplar plantations in Greece.
