Abstract
Since 1975 Norway spruce is vegetatively propagated successfully at the Laufen tree nursery through cuttings. Plants selected for late flushing and rapid growth were used for field test sites subjected to late frosts. The success of rooting decreased from 84% (primary generation) due to clone aging. Cuttings rooted best when taken from 3 to 6 year old "motherplants". The use of rooting hormones is necessary for Norway spruce. For research purposes clones with large numbers of ramets are required. In order to obtain ca.700 ramets (0 + 1 + 3) from one clone four cutting generations are needed, that is 16 years.
