The availability of forest tree seed of known provenance is the basis of sustained yield forestry. Forest decline has increased the demand for such seed. The two seed processing plants of the Bavarian Institution for Seeding and Planting at Teisendorf, in Bindlach and Laufen have increased their seed harvesting efforts especially in the areas of severe forest damage. The work is closely coordinated with the state forest districts which are also supported in making cone crop predictions and in organizing and carrying out the seed harvest. The harvest seed is used for: Partially supplying seed for the Bavrian State forests, maintaining sufficient seed of indigenous tree species and provenances for periods between harvests, long-term storage of seed in the seed-bank as prescribed in the Federal and State concept of preserving forest genetic resources and various research purposes.
