  • Abstract
Variability of budding time between subpopulations and within populations was investigated as a basis for the elaboration and implementation of a breeding programme aimed at the selection of late-budding beech populations, relatively resistant to late frost. Some results of investigation into the course of budding on a provenance research area are surveyed in brief. The observations were performed in 20 subpopulations by visual evaluation of the degree of budding, based on a six point scale. There are statistically significant differences between the provenances of beech for all the phenological stages under study in both years of observation. The effect of weather conditions or of the years upon budding time is statistically highly significant. The contribution of the provenance x years interaction to the variance is comparatively small. The results suggest that the selection of late-budding beech subpopulations has realistic prospects in Czechoslovakia.
