Using Feulgen squash and Giemsa C banding method on chromosomes from endosperm of three European black pine trees (Pinus nigra Arn.), two Scots pine trees (P. sylvestris L.), one Japanese red pine ramete (P. densiflora Sieb. & Zucc.) and one F1 hybrid between European black and Scots pine (P. x nigrosylvis Vid.), individual variability of chromosome morphology was investigated, comparing karyotypes from the standpoint of incompatibility between European black and Scots pine. Significant differences among karyotypes has been found between and within species as to morphological characteristics of chromosomes; small quantity of constitutive heterochromatin in pine chromosomes; hetermorphy of chromosome XI as to the centromere position.
