After the Second World War large amounts were needed in Europe. To meet this demand it was deemed necessary to improve logging and transport methods. The Joint FAO/ECE/ILO Committee established in 1955, became an important instrument in the exchange of information about forest working methods and training of forest workers between countries. Norway led by Ivar Samset was poised to play a leading role in this work. He chaired the Study Group on the Application of Machinery to Forest Work for 15 years from the start in 1955, was chairman of several symposia arranged by the Joint Committee and contributed outstandingly to the work of the committee.
