Austrian cable yarding is internationally accepted not only for its tradition but also for its high technical standard. The development of cable yarding from ground skidding to transport by winches attached t6o agricultural tractors, by bogies and grapples is discussed. The main emphasis of the paper lies on skyline yarding as it is now carried out in Austria. A representative survey of methods and machinery is included. Installation of a mobile spar yarder and timber extraction on steep slopes is described. Improvements initiated by practical forest work and taken over by producers are listed and methods of using expensive machinery without owning it are suggested.
