  • Abstract
Results based on two investigations of the forest and landcape preferences of the population, and of different segments of the population, are given. A postal questionnaire survey of 2,826 individuals (response-percentage 89,4%) and personal interviews of 216 individuals at their homes (response- percentage 87.9%) were carried out inthe period from April 1977 to November 1978, on the basis of a representative sample of the Danish population (16- 77 years old). For the postal questionnaire survey the experimental method was usedto measure the preferences of the population: 52 black and white photos and 10 0 verbal stimuli which were pairwise or groupwise alike except for one factor -the topic under investigation - were used to represent the forest landscape. E ach respondent had to rank 7 randomly sampled photos and 7 randomly sampled verbal stimuli. For the personal interviews a modification of the scenic beauty estimation methods was used. The method involved each respondent assessing 80 colour slides during the interview. The places where to colour slides were taken were randomly sampled so the slides would represent four types of landscape in Denmark: broadleaved forest, coniferous forest, the countryside, and facilities for forest recreation. Furthermore, the effect of promotion on the preferences for broadleaved/coniferous forest was tested. Preference estimations in general are discussed, as well as the sources of error in this kind of investigation. The results are grouped according to the character of the landscape management actionswhich might influence the quality of an outdoor recreation experience, i.e. especially actions in connection with the silvicultural system, the choice of tree species, regeneration and tending of stands, recreation and influences related to recreational use. As main results it is found tht "Silence" and seeing a roe-deer are ranked extremely high by the population; broadleaved forest ranks in general higher in preference than coniferous forest, and beech forest higher than all other broadleaved forest.
